Health Research

AMSANT aims to encourage research that is community-led. We prioritise Aboriginal-led and co-designed research that reflects the needs of, and the work already being done by, our Member services.

AMSANT promotes Aboriginal health research through engagement in health research partnerships, as well as through internally managed research projects. AMSANT has an internal review process, through the AMSANT Board Research Subcommittee.

Central Australian Academic Health Science Network (CAAHSN)

AMSANT is a member of the Central Australian Academic Health Science Network (CAAHSN) which includes 13 members made up of Aboriginal health organisations and key health, research, university and government partners. It was formally recognised as a Centre for Innovation in Regional Health [CIRH] in June 2017 and it is the only CIRH with a major emphasis on Aboriginal health.

CAAHSN receives funding through the Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF) and AMSANT is leading or partnering in numerous research projects that are funded through CAAHSN.

Lowitja Institute

AMSANT is a proud supporter and one of nine ‘essential partners’ of the Lowitja Institute – Australia’s national institute for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health research. The Lowitja Institute operates on key principles of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leadership, a broader understanding of health that incorporates wellbeing, and the need for the work to have a clear and positive impact.

AMSANT Health Research Approvals Process

For Researchers Seeking Community Support and Recommendations

AMSANT cannot speak on behalf of individual Members, Associate Members or Aboriginal communities.  Researchers seeking to work with AMSANT Members, Associate Members or local communities should approach them directly.

The AMSANT Research Subcommittee will assess and make recommendations to the AMSANT board, in relation to a research or evaluation project when:

  • The research is co-created with AMSANT.
  • The research has a national or NT-wide focus.
  • At the request of a Member or Associate Member.

If the recommendation results in a letter of support for a project, this does not imply support (or lack thereof) of AMSANT Members, Associate Members or Aboriginal communities in the Northern Territory

If you have any enquiries, please do not hesitate to email researchadmin@amsant.org.au.

The AMSANT Research Subcommittee meets four times annually. If you would like your proposal considered, please have it submitted to researchadmin@amsant.org.au at least 28 days prior to the next Research Subcommittee meeting. Late applications will not be considered until the following Research Subcommittee meeting. Please allow at least 14 days for a reply.
