Leaders Creating other Leaders

The Congress leadership Workshop kicked off at 9am Monday morning and was facilitated by Timmy Duggan, AMSANT’s Leadership Project Officer. The workshop was delivered twice to two groups of 12 Congress staff (24 in total) on the 3rd and 4th of December 2018.

The day started with an Acknowledgement to Country by Aunty Doris Stuart, followed by guest speaker, William Tilmouth (Chairperson of Congress Board) introduced by Tracey Brand. Participants then started on a leadership charterĀ (Introduction) which they would re-visit later that day.

Following on from Morning tea break, Timmy gave a great insight into Emotional Intelligence (EI or EQ) along with some activities and challenges such as the “Wide Variety of Emotions” activity which involved four groups to each do role play, showing a wide variety of emotions in a made-up situation/ scenario.

The Confused Rope Activity was a fun one, it had everyone thinking! Participants got to reflect on the type of leadership styles shown during the activity that involved having to come up with a strategy to extend the rope in a straight line while being mindful of the rules and restrictions.

This activity is also good for team building and learning to work together, using effective communication and thinking strategically.

Being an effective communicator is a top attribute of a leader, so after the Confused Rope Activity, everyone joined in on a Communication Activity called ‘Mine Field’, which involved key leadership components like trust and effective listening.
